Window Seater Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Window Seater Ltd (“Window Seater”, “we”, “us”) handles privacy and data across the Window Seater mobile app, web app, and website.

Window Seater designs its products to minimise data collection wherever possible and to prioritise anonymity and privacy.

1. Data controller

Window Seater Ltd is the data controller for any data processed in connection with Window Seater products and services.

2. Window Seater mobile app

The Window Seater mobile app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. It delivers audio stories that unlock as you travel, using your phone’s location to determine when content should play.

How the mobile app works

When you start a trip, the app listens for nearby content by checking:

  • Whether the device has moved
  • The device’s geolocation relative to a route

To function correctly, the app may request permission to access:

  • Location data
  • Physical activity data
  • Background location access

Background access allows the app to check periodically for nearby stories while you are travelling. Check-ins are limited and adaptive to reduce battery use.

When the app detects that your journey has ended, after a period of inactivity, or when you press Stop Trip, background activity stops.

Your data (mobile app)

Your precise location and movement data:

  • Are used only on your device to trigger audio content
  • Are not transmitted to Window Seater
  • Are not stored, collected, shared or analysed by us

Window Seater does not access, collect, use or retain personal location or movement data from the mobile app.

3. Window Seater web app 

The Window Seater web app is accessed by scanning a QR code on board the train. No download, login or registration is required.

How the web app works

The web app delivers audio content based on the train you are travelling on, not on your personal device or your personal location.

It does this using:

The Window Seater web app:

  • Does not access your phone’s GPS or location services
  • Does not identify or track individual users
  • Does not collect, store or share personal data
  • Does not use cookies, analytics or tracking technologies

We track the train, not the passenger. Usage is anonymous and session-based and ends when the session ends.

4. Window Seater website

The Window Seater website is an informational website only.

  • Only strictly neccesary/essential cookies used for the basic functionality of the website are used
  • No individual user tracking technologies are used
  • No personal data is collected or stored

5. Lawful basis

Where personal data is processed (mobile app only), it is processed solely on the basis of user consent and is used only on the user’s device.

Where no personal data is processed (web app and website), no lawful basis under UK GDPR Article 6 is required.

6. Children’s privacy

Window Seater does not knowingly collect personal data from children or adults. The web app and website do not collect personal data at all.

7. Third-party services

The Window Seater web app and website do not integrate third-party advertising, analytics or tracking services.

8. Changes to this policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. The most recent version will always be available on the Window Seater website.
